CSS Decryption Processes (copy-protection removal)

Most DVD movies today are encrypted with the Content Scrambling System (CSS) in order to prevent DVD duplication. Ideally, the DVD copying software will have a CSS decrypting feature built-in. However, some solutions provide links to an external decrypting utility instead which you will have to download. In the review above, we identify this feature with the terms below:

Built-in – Best
The CSS decryptor (copy-protection removal) is included as a feature in the application. There are no additional downloads, installations, or executables necessary.

Integrated – Good
The software provides an easy link to an external CSS decryptor (copy-protection removal) which you must first download and install. After installation, the decryptor works in the background and is invisible. The process to copy a DVD (including the decryption) is started and finished with the DVD copying software.

Separate – Fair
You must first find, download and install an external CSS decryptor. Then, depending on which decryptor you use, there may be additional steps that you must complete for each DVD before you use the DVD copying software to compress and/or burn your copy.
